Plant Fossils and Petrified Woods of North Texas


 Petrified Wood



There are many different types of plant fossils that are found on our property. There are plants that grew in the sea, and there is also an abundance of petrified wood. Most of the petrified wood is found only a few feet deep in the lower elevations, and is from the Paluxy Sand formation, which is much younger than that of the marine life. Most of the marine life fossils are found in the Comanche Peak formation. We have found several different colors and shapes with the largest being ab out 2.5 feet long and 8 inches wide. Most is limestone colored, that is white or near white, but some is a dark brown color. See the examples shown below.
